Choosing Silicon Carbide Grinding Paper
Match the starting grit to the material and the amount of stock to remove, then step down through the grit sequence without skipping a grade, removing the prior scratch pattern completely at each step before advancing. PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) backing adheres directly to the platen and is the standard for automated grinder-polishers; plain backing is used with a separate adhesive or magnetic system, or for hand grinding on a flat plate.

What grit silicon carbide paper should I start with?
For most annealed and medium-hard metals, start at 120 to 240 grit for planar grinding, then progress through 320, 600, and 1200 grit before transitioning to diamond polishing. Softer metals (aluminum, copper) can start finer at 320 to 400 grit; harder steels and superalloys start coarser at 80 to 120 grit. Above roughly HRC 60, silicon carbide paper wears quickly — use a diamond grinding disc instead.
What is the difference between P-grade and ANSI grit numbers?
P-grade (FEPA) and ANSI (CAMI) are two grit-numbering standards. They match at coarse sizes but diverge at fine sizes: P1200 is finer than ANSI 1200. Our papers are graded so you can match either standard — specify the grit and standard you use and we will confirm the correct paper.
