Both types hold diamond in a bonded matrix and remove material at a high rate under lubricant, but they wear and finish differently:

Grits run from 120 (P120) for planar grinding through 1200 (P4000) for fine grinding before polishing. Step down through the grit sequence without skipping a grade, removing the prior scratch pattern completely at each step. One metal-bond disc can replace several silicon carbide paper steps on hard materials, holding flatness across many samples and lowering cost per use. Both bonds are available with PSA or magnetic backing to fit standard platens.
When to Use a Diamond Disc Instead of SiC Paper
Above roughly HRC 60 (HV 700) — cemented carbides, technical ceramics, silicon carbide, boron carbide — silicon carbide paper wears too quickly and produces excessive relief. A diamond grinding disc removes material efficiently, holds flatness, and lasts far longer, which is why it is the standard grinding medium for hard-material workflows and a common replacement for the coarse SiC steps.
