Overview

Zirconia Grinding Disc — Adhesive Backed

What This Product Is

Zirconia-alumina grinding disc with PSA adhesive backing, for coarse grinding of harder materials on rotary platens. Zirconia-alumina's toughness gives high material removal and long disc life on hard, wear-resistant specimens, and the adhesive backing mounts quickly on standard platens.

Intended Use in Metallography

Used for coarse planar grinding of harder materials, after sectioning, on rotary grinding systems. Selected when:

  • Grinding hard or wear-resistant materials that dull SiC quickly
  • High material removal and long disc life are wanted
  • A quick-mounting adhesive disc suits the platen

Typical Applications

  • Hardened steels and wear-resistant materials
  • Coarse initial grinding of tough specimens on rotary platens

Beyond metallography, zirconia grinding discs are also used in:

  • Ceramics and hard advanced materials
  • Tool and die and general hard-material grinding

When This Product Is NOT Ideal

  • For fine grinding or finishing (use finer SiC or diamond discs)
  • For soft materials where SiC is sufficient and more economical

Compatibility and Equivalents

A zirconia-alumina grinding abrasive for the same grinding steps served by the zirconia grinding products from Buehler, Struers, and Allied High Tech. Fits the major grinding systems — and all other major brands — with no change to your process. It is a comparable product for the same step — not a branded or drop-in item.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use a zirconia disc instead of silicon carbide?

For coarse grinding of hard, wear-resistant materials, where zirconia-alumina's toughness gives higher removal and longer life. Silicon carbide is used for finer grinding and general work.

What grits and sizes are available?

60 and 120 grit, in 8, 10, and 12 inch discs with adhesive backing, sold in boxes of 25.

Can zirconia grinding discs be used outside metallography?

Yes. They are used for ceramics and hard advanced materials, and tool-and-die and general hard-material grinding, wherever tough coarse grinding on a rotary platen is needed.
