Overview

Zirconia Grinding Belt

What This Product Is

Zirconia-alumina abrasive grinding belt for coarse grinding of harder materials. Zirconia-alumina is tougher and longer-lasting than standard silicon carbide on hard, high-removal work, so these belts hold up under aggressive coarse grinding.

Intended Use in Metallography

Used for coarse planar grinding of harder materials, after sectioning. Selected when:

  • Grinding hard or wear-resistant materials that dull SiC quickly
  • Fast, aggressive initial material removal is required
  • Belt life and toughness matter for the workload

Typical Applications

  • Hardened steels and wear-resistant materials
  • Coarse initial grinding of tough specimens

Beyond metallography, zirconia grinding belts are also used in:

  • Ceramics and hard advanced materials
  • Tool and die and general hard-material grinding

When This Product Is NOT Ideal

  • For fine grinding or finishing (use finer SiC papers or discs)
  • For soft materials where SiC is sufficient and more economical

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose zirconia over silicon carbide for coarse grinding?

Zirconia-alumina is tougher and lasts longer on hard, high-removal work, so it holds up where silicon carbide dulls quickly. Silicon carbide remains the choice for finer grinding and general use.

What grit and size are the belts?

60 grit for coarse grinding, 4 × 36 inches, sold in boxes of 5.

Can zirconia belts be used outside metallography?

Yes. Zirconia-alumina belts are used for ceramics and hard advanced materials, and tool-and-die and general hard-material grinding, wherever tough coarse grinding is needed.
