Diamond Discs/Laps
Overview
Diamond Discs / Laps
What This Product Is
Diamond-charged discs and laps for fine grinding and lapping. These are rigid diamond tools that deliver flat, controlled material removal on hard materials, and many are produced to spec for a specific size, diamond grade, or application. For non-standard requirements, we make them to order.
Intended Use in Metallography
Used for fine grinding and lapping on hard, wear-resistant materials where a flat, controlled cut and long tool life are wanted. Selected when:
- Lapping hard materials to a flat, uniform surface
- A durable diamond lap is preferred over coated abrasives
- A custom size, grade, or configuration is required
Typical Applications
- Hard, wear-resistant metals and materials
- Ceramics and hard advanced materials
- Custom lapping and fine-grinding operations
Beyond metallography, diamond discs and laps are also used in ceramics, optics, and tool-and-die lapping wherever flat, precise diamond material removal on hard materials is needed.
When This Product Is NOT Ideal
- For soft materials better served by conventional abrasives
- For routine grinding where SiC papers or standard diamond discs are sufficient
Where This Fits in the Preparation Process
- Used during fine grinding and lapping, between coarse grinding and polishing

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a diamond lap used for?
Flat, controlled fine grinding and lapping of hard materials, using diamond charged into a rigid disc or plate for long tool life and a uniform surface.
Do you make custom diamond discs and laps?
Yes. Many are made to spec, and we produce custom sizes, diamond grades, and configurations to order — contact us with your requirement.
Can diamond laps be used outside metallography?
Yes. They are used in ceramics, optics, and tool-and-die lapping wherever flat, precise material removal on hard materials is required.
