Diamond Paste or Diamond Suspension? Pick Based on How You Polish

The abrasive inside is the same. What differs is the carrier. Diamond paste holds the particles in a thick oil or wax base that stays where you put it. Diamond suspension disperses the same particles in a free flowing liquid you drip or spray onto a moving cloth. Manual polishing favors paste. Automated polishing with a dispenser favors suspension. At equal micron sizes, both produce the same final surface when used correctly.

And despite decades of suspensions, slurries, and sprays arriving on the market, paste never went away. Our paste customers today are mold and die shops, universities, and even large industrial labs that still hand polish. Paste was not replaced by newer formats. It coexists with them, because nothing else does its particular job as well.

When paste is the right call

Hand polishing is paste territory. The thick carrier keeps the diamond exactly where you apply it, which matters when you are working a mold cavity, a die channel, a felt bob, or a single mounted specimen on a stationary wheel. A pea sized dab spread across the surface will polish a surprising number of samples before it needs recharging. This is why mold and die shops have stayed loyal to paste through every new format the industry has introduced: on a vertical cavity wall, a suspension runs and a paste clings.

Paste is also the natural answer for water sensitive materials, and this explains a pattern in our own sales. Customers who need an oil carrier overwhelmingly buy it as paste rather than as oil based suspension, because paste is already an oil or wax base containing almost no water. It solves the water sensitivity problem by default, in the same product that suits hand application.

There is a third use experienced metallographers swear by: priming. A brand new polishing cloth charged with a thin layer of paste before first use loads diamond into the fibers immediately, instead of waiting minutes for a dispenser to drip enough suspension into the nap. The cloth cuts properly from minute one and lasts longer too.

The downside of paste is consistency over time. As you polish, the carrier thins and the diamond concentration on the cloth drifts unless you recharge. Manageable by hand. A nuisance on an automated polisher running dozens of samples.

When suspension is the right call

Any polisher with a dispensing system wants suspension. Burst dispensers, peristaltic pumps, even a manual spray bottle applied every thirty seconds. The liquid carrier delivers fresh abrasive and lubrication together at a steady rate, so cutting action stays uniform from the first sample to the fiftieth. For labs running batches, that repeatability is the entire game: the 3 micron step behaves identically on Tuesday and Friday, across operators, which is what lets a prep method validate cleanly.

Suspensions also cover large platens far better. Spreading paste evenly across a 12 inch cloth is genuinely annoying. Suspension takes two seconds.

What most working labs actually do

They use both. Suspension feeds the automated steps. A few syringes of paste live in the drawer for hand touch up, cloth priming, and water sensitive samples. The two formats are complements, not competitors, and at equivalent micron sizes from a consistent manufacturer the finish is interchangeable.
